Town Spring Cleanup is April 25

The Town Council has declared April 25 (raindate April 26) as Winthrop Beautification Day for 2015. Officials hope that group and individual clean ups will target parks, schools, beaches, fields, in front of businesses, homes, etc. A number of volunteers are needed.

“A clean town is not just one day,” said Town Council President James Gill, adding that when one property owner cleans up it tends to make others do the same.

Some folks have already gotten a jump on the trash.

The Beautification Committee, with resident Alan Peabody leading the charge, and his wife Betty, who cannot walk by trash without picking it up, according to Gill, were out at the end of March gathering trash. Along with two other volunteers the crew picked up one and half pickup truck loads of trash on a half-mile stretch of Veterans Road. Peabody noted that Miller Field is covered with trash, but it is not from the winter, he said.

“I’d like to see the school department utilize the coaches and teams to pick up the fields they use,” Peabody said.

Also on April 25, the Friends of the Belle Isle Marsh, DCR, and St. John’s Episcopal Church are sponsoring a spring clean up at the Kilmartin Path at Short Beach in Winthrop from 9 am-12 noon.

May 3 from 2-4 pm Richard Honan is heading up a clean up of Yirrell Beach. Meet at the handicap entrance. Bags and gloves will be supplied. The clean up will run from the base of Water Tower Hill and Crab Lagoon down to Deer Island.
