Congratulations, All-Scholastic Sean Gillis

When a team has one of the best seasons in all of Massachusetts, as the Winthrop High football team did in 2014 with its amazing 10-1 record (including a win over Revere on Thanksgiving), there is likely to be individual recognition for the top players. And such is the case for the Vikings with senior Sean Gillis being named to the Boston Globe All-Scholastic Football team,  a significant honor for a high school athlete. Sean was so consistently excellent for the Vikings this season, leading by example both with his dedication to the team in the off season and his tenacity and determination on the field.

We know that the All-Scholastic recognition must be a proud time for his Sean’s father, John Gillis, who starred for back-to-back undefeated Winthrop High School teams in 1981 and 1982. And it’s not only the outstanding performances on the football field that is recognized with his All-Scholastic achievement, but also Sean’s excellence in the classroom as one of top-ranked students in the WHS Class of 2015.

Coach Sean Driscoll did a fantastic job maximizing the talent and potential of Sean Gillis and the entire Viking team team this season — and we understand that Sean Driscoll himself may be in line for some major coaching awards as well. We hope that our two Seans — Driscoll and Gillis — will honor our school and lead a large contingent of Vikings into the Harry Agganis All-Star Football Classic in June.
