WHS Students to Present ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’

The Winthrop High School Drama Society will be presenting the full-length play, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” Dec. 4-6. This sentimental Christmas classic emphasizes the belief that good will always triumph over evil, and that true riches are the treasures of love, friendship, and family.

“We have a large cast and crew, and everyone has been working really hard. The set is beautiful and unexpected,” says Karen Calinda, Drama Teacher and Director. “I hope that the fact that it’s familiar will bring people out. It’s our first big, main stage show in this auditorium.”

George Bailey is a devoted son whose dream was to leave his small hometown of Bedford Falls to travel the world; but instead stayed home to preside over the family-owned Building and Loan. Despondent by how mundane his life has become, George considers taking his own life on a cold and snowy night, but is saved by the angel, Clarence Odbody. The sweet Clarence, who hopes to earn his wings by proving to George how precious life is, shows him what life would be like had he never been born, and guides the audience through flashbacks.

“It’s by far my favorite Christmas movie of all time,” says Bobby Gioiosa, who plays George. “I grew up watching the movie and I’m excited that I get to see how it is adapted to stage.”

This stage version of “It’s a Wonderful Life” incorporates iconic scenes such as Buffalo Gals, when George and his future wife, Mary Hatch, pause in front of the old Grandville place after they make a splash during a Charleston dance contest at Mary’s prom. It also includes the conclusion when George realizes that he wants his old life back and he is united with his family.

Calinda commends the actors for their abilities to seamlessly differentiate the versions of their characters. Not only does Elizabeth Carsley portrays George’s wife, the wholesome and romantic Mary; but she transforms into the quiet librarian who never gets married had George never been born.

“I love the movie and it has been a lot of fun to do,” says Carsley. “It’s by far the most different and fun show I’ve ever done.”

Winthrop High School will be performing “It’s a Wonderful Life” Dec. 4-5 at 7pm, and Dec. 6 at 2pm and 7pm in the high school auditorium. Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for students and seniors, and can be purchased at the door or in advance by calling (781) 656-5890.

“People should be appreciative of everything they have and not underestimate the good they do in their daily lives,” says Calinda about the message of the play.
