“Supporting the Troops” this Holiday-Christmas season”

Dear Editor:

 Do you have a brother, sister, uncle, friend, niece or neighbor serving with the United States Military in some distant land? Perhaps in Afghanistan, South Korea, Africa, Japan, Turkey or aboard a ship in the Pacific Ocean or the Persian Gulf. Contact me with their name, hometown and military address. They do not even have to be from Winthrop. Tell me how you know them. I will make sure they receive a Christmas or Holiday tree, decorations, candy, homemade holiday cookies, Santa Claus hats, holiday music, maple syrup, etc.

When I served in Vietnam, I remembered the terrible loneliness, the feeling of missing family and friends, the fear of being forgotten. to those serving far from home, I’ll help put a smile on their face, a smile in their heart and a smile in their stomach. Thank you letter from an American soldier

Today is Friday and I just received your care package. I can not put into words how grateful I am. It was a surprise to say the least. In your letter you mentioned how something as simple as a candy bar can make all the difference. That is so true. It is the little things that matter most and your package brought a smile to my face and made me forget about how far away from family and friends I really am.

The simple gesture of taking the time to prepare a care package for someone you don’t even know is what makes all the difference to our Service Men and Women. As a Veteran, you know we do not serve for the money or the medals. It is who we are and what we are. We love our Country and feel the need to serve and be a part of something bigger than ourselves. The only thing our service members want is the support of the people back home. Thank you for that support. I shared the contents of the package with my shipmates and you not only made my day, you made my entire Unit’s day.

Our Unit is rotating back to the USA in late January. I look forward to getting back home to family and friends and my job as a CT. State Trooper. Again, Thank you for the care package it meant the world to me. Please keep in touch and all the best to you and your family.
