WHS Graduate Aldana Receives Massport Scholarship

A Winthrop High School graduate was the recipient of a Massport Scholarship last week. Heaven E. Aguirre-Aldana, a Winthrop High School graduate who is attending University of Massachusetts Boston received one of two students to receive a $1,500 Diversity Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Scholarship from the Port Authority.

The Scholarships are awarded to graduating high school students who have shown an interest in pursuing a degree that could be utilized in the transportation industry, in community service, have been accepted to an accredited college or university and have submitted essay’s describing their career interests or how community service has affected their outlook on life.

“There are countless career paths in the tech and science industries that these students could someday travel down, especially in the Boston area,” said Massport CEO Thomas P. Glynn. “We hope these scholarships encourage even more students to take a serious look at the STEM disciplines when deciding their futures.”

Massport’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) scholarship is awarded to three graduating High School seniors annually. Along with Aldana, this year’s $1,500 prizes was also awarded to Revere High School graduate Nicole M. Marmol who will attend Marian Court College this fall. The $3,000 prize was awarded to East Boston High School graduate Ruth Andrade who will attend Suffolk University this fall.

To be considered for the Diversity STEM Scholarship, graduating seniors must be, a resident of the neighboring community ; a minority; A high school senior with a minimum 3.0 GPA; accepted to an accredited college or university; Involved in community service; and Interested in pursuing a degree that could be utilized in the Transportation Industry; areas of study may include: Aviation, Business Administration, Accounting, Architecture, Engineering, Finance, and Human Resources

Students must submit an application and the winners are selected by the Diversity STEM Scholarship Committee comprised of Massport employees from various departments.
