Barbara Cummings

Championship Bowler, Active in Winthrop Community

Barbara (Boisvert) Cummings of Winthrop passed away August 11 surrounded by her loving family. She was 81 years old.

Barbara was a very active member of the Winthrop community. She was a championship bowler for many years at CPYC and volunteered for numerous organizations including the PTA, Youth Hockey, and WINARC. In recent years, Barbara was active at the Winthrop Senior Center where she enjoyed Zumba and trips to Foxwoods. Most of all, Barbara enjoyed being with her family and many friends.

Barbara was the dear and devoted wife of 59 years of Arthur T. “Arky” Cummings; loving mother of Kevin Cummings and Susan of Winthrop, Scott Cummings and Alison of Bedford, NH, Douglas Cummings and Colleen of Longmeadow, Donna Cummings and Brenda of Revere, and Leslee Kfoury and Louis of Winthrop; beloved “Mimi” of Amy, Michelle, Kyle, Kara, David, Ali, Sarah, Isabel, Jillian, Julia and Ryan; dear sister of Elizabeth “Bonnie” Ripley of Bedford, NH and the late Mary Boisvert. She is also survived by her large and loving extended family.

Barbara’s Funeral Mass was held Saturday, August 16 at St. John the Evangelist Church, Winthrop. Interment was in the Belle Isle Section of Winthrop Cemetery. Anita Costa

Lifetime Winthrop Resident

Anita M. Costa of Marshall Street, Winthrop passed away at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers on August 19. She was 93 years old.

Born in Winthrop, she was the beloved daughter of the late Anita (Cammarata) and Anthony Mulone. A lifetime resident of Winthrop, she was employed as an Administrative Assistant with Arbella Insurance Company for many years.

She was the devoted wife of the late Raymond C. Costa and the loving mother of Raymond Costa and his former wife, Marilyn of Winthrop; the dear sister of the late Frank J. Mulone, Jack Mulone, Anthony Mulone, Natale Mulone and Louise Morana; cherished grandmother of Andrew Costa and his wife, Romina of Atlanta, Georgia and Stephen Costa and his wife, Nicole of Salem and the great grandmother of Madeline and Grayson Costa.

Her funeral will be conducted from Ernest P. Caggiano and Son-O’Maley Funeral Home, Winthrop today, Thursday, August 21 at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church, 320 Winthrop St., Winthrop at 11:30 a.m. Entombment to follow the Mass will be in the Holy Cross Chapel Mausoleum.

Roseann Tavares

Longtime Proprietor of Pleasant Times Learning Center in Winthrop

Roseann Tavares of Danvers, formerly of Winthrop, passed away at the Boston Medical Center on August 19 after a prolonged illness. She was 61 years old.

The proprietor of the Pleasant Times Learning Center in Winthrop for many years, she was born in Winthrop, the beloved daughter of Rose (Toscano) and the late Nicholas J. Maggio.

She was the devoted wife of Manuel J. Tavares and the loving mother of Julianne, Andrea and Lea Tavares, all of Danvers; the dear sister of Nicholas Maggio, III of Winthrop, Diane Morel of North Reading and Anthony Maggio of Winthrop.

Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the visitation from the Ernest P. Caggiano and Son-O’Maley Funeral Home, Winthrop today, Thursday, August 21 from 4 to 8 p.m. The funeral will be held from the funeral home on Friday, August 22 at 9 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church 320 Winthrop St., Winthrop at 10 a.m. Committal will be private. Sean McCarthy

Longtime Boston Globe Truck Driver 

Sean S. McCarthy of Wilshire Street, Winthrop passed away unexpectedly at home on August 17. He was 54 years old. Born in Winthrop, the beloved son of Grace A. (Flanagan) and the late John P. McCarthy, he was a life long resident of Winthrop and was employed as a truck driver for the Boston Globe for many years. He was a member of the Winthrop Yacht Club, VFW Beachmont and a former member of the Teamsters.

He was the dear brother of Kevin McCarthy and his wife, Debra, Maura McCarthy, Paul McCarthy and his wife, Lisa, Brendan McCarthy and his wife, Diane, Brian McCarthy and his wife, Lauren, Kathleen Walsh and her husband, John all of Winthrop and Dennis McCarthy and his wife, Linda of Billerica.

The funeral will be conducted from the Ernest P. Caggiano and Son-O’Maley Funeral Home, 147 Winthrop St., Winthrop today, Thursday, August 21 at 9 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church, 320 Winthrop St., Winthrop at 10 a.m. Interment will follow the Mass in the Belle Isle section of Winthrop Cemetery.
