Honoring the Veterans

John Floyd, former Exalted Ruler of the Winthrop Lodge of Elks, and Captain Tim Gover led their annual Salute to the Veterans Saturday, paying tribute to the service of more than 200 veterans, including several Winthrop residents. The fifth annual event began with a boat ride leaving from Winthrop and traveling into the harbor into a parade where the U.S. Coast Guard and other organizations hailed the veterans and thanked them for their service to our country.

The veterans returned to the Town Landing where they enjoyed a delicious cookout consisting of hot dogs, cheeseburgers, chicken, and soft drinks. The veterans truly enjoyed the event, as they gather each year in our town to remember their own contributions in their military service.

It was great to see Winthrop Elks Exalted Ruler Frances Minichello representing that fine organization as well Anne Marie Gardner, president of the Emblem Club. Council President Peter Gill brought the official greetings of the town, taking the time to personally recognize each veteran in attendance.

John Floyd said that next year’s event will be even bigger and better — which seems like a tall task considering how well this year’s event went.
