National Night Out Planned For August 5

Winthrop will be hosting National Night Out for the first time in five years on Tuesday, August 5 at 5PM. National Night Out is an event that many may remember from the past, which unites police officers with the public, allowing people to meet them at a social event rather than in a time of need. This year, the Winthrop Police Department is putting a ton of effort into making this one of the most memorable Night Outs, along with people who are generous enough to donate their time and effort into such a great cause.

By the Winthrop Police Department, people are expected to see an exciting variety of activities, from a professional balloonist to fingerprinting, and even Winthrop Parks and Recreation doing face-painting for kids. People will be able to take a tour of the police station with the Explorers. Both the Meat Market and the Methodist Church will provide delicious barbecued foods, and Richie’s Slush is kindly donating slush for children. The State Police are bringing a SWAT truck, Corvette, and providing us with a seatbelt demonstration. The Winthrop Fire Department is also involved in Night Out, and will have a fire safety house demonstration, and show the Jaws of Life at work on an old police cruiser. For all the dog lovers out there, there will be two K-9 demonstrations. Shuffle Board is providing live entertainment for everyone as well. The fun night will end with Boston Police playing bagpipes and drums, and the traditional parade around Winthrop.

Many kind people are contributing to this year’s Night Out, specifically Chief Terrence Delehanty and Lieutenant Frank Scarpa who are running all the events. Sergeant Steve Rogers and Detective Dawne Armitstead helped coordinate all of the departments in participating, along with Chief Paul Flannagan of the Winthrop Fire Department. One of the biggest contributors, MassPort, along with the Meat Market, Action Ambulance, Margaret Winthrop Rebekah Lodge, and Parks and Recreation. The Winthrop Police Department would also like to thank Speaker Bob DeLeo and Senator Anthony Petruccelli for supporting financially and helped get the equipement to Winthrop.

The night will surely be one to remember, and everyone is encouraged to stop by and check it out!
