The Winthrop Improvement and Historical Association (WIHA) is proud to host a Ceilidh (pronounced kay-lee), a musical program of Cape Breton, Irish, and Scottish music preformed by two well-respected musicians in the field of Celtic music. Pianist Janine Randall and fiddler, Emerald Rae, will perform on Wednesday evening, July 23rd from 6:00-8:00pm in the beautiful back yard of the Deane Winthrop House.

The event is free and the public is encouraged to bring lawn chairs or a blanket.  No pets or unaccompanied minors will be admitted.  This is a family friendly, smoke free, alcohol free free event for people of all ages.  Cold drinks and snacks will be available for a modest donation.  In the event of rain, we will move the concert into the Deane Winthrop barn.  We will have chairs in there, but the seating will be limited.

Our pianist Janine Randall, was born into the Cape Breton musical tradition through both parents.  During her career, she has accompanied most of the elite Cape Breton and Prince Edward Island fiddlers, including Jerry Holland, Brenda Stubbert, and Buddy McMaster.  She has also accompanied Irish fiddle greats Liz Doherty, Matt Cranitich, PVC O’Donnell, The Chieftains, and piper Michael Cooney.  Ms. Randall was nominated for a Grammy award in 2009 as a collaborator (accompanist) for classical violinist Caroline Goulding and has a discography of six CD’s including: “Moxie” and “Contemplaytion.”

Fiddler, Emerald Rae joined Ms. Randall on the Contemplaytion Cd.  She was also born to the musician’s life through her parents, who had a country-rock band.  A native of Gloucester, MA, she was the winner of the US Scottish Fiddle Championship at age 18.  After attending  Berklee College of Music Emerald moved to Glasgow to study musicology.  Her debut CD is entitled “If Only I Could Fly.”

This is the first WIHA “Music on the Lawn” program.  It is a wonderful opportunity for people of all ages to enjoy great music and the Deane Winthrop grounds on a summer’s evening.  We are located at 34 Shirley St., Winthrop, MA.

We would like the thank our sponsor for this event, Webster First Federal Credit Union for helping to make this event possible.
