Show Your Support: Parks Committee Planning Family Fun Night, March 29

One only has to take a walk to the hidden treasure known as Pico Park off of Pico Avenue to see the results of the Winthrop Parks Committee’s first renovation project.

Pico Park looked, in a word – beautiful – on that day last summer at the opening ceremony with its new basketball court, street hockey court, canopy, seating area,  playground equipment and superior landscaping.

The Parks Committee, founded in September, 2012 by Council President Peter Gill and currently chaired by Linda Brassard, has set its sights on Pond Street Park in the Highlands with renovations ongoing and the opening ceremony set for late spring.

Brassard and committee members Dawn Manning, Dawn Sullivan, Liz Donovan, and Barbara Duffy are hosting their second annual fundraiser, Family Fun Night, on Saturday, March 29, from 4 to 8 p.m., at the Cottage Park Yacht Club.

Last year’s Fun Night attracted about 200 people and raised $7,000 for park renovations. The goal this year is $10,000, according to Brassard.

Hot dogs, pizza, pop corn, and cotton candy are on the food menu. The national finalist Winthrop High School cheerleading squad will perform some routines. There will be a Zumba (With Tara) demonstration. There will be musical entertainment and some surprise cartoon characters appearing in costume. Raffle drawings for gifts will be held.

Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Boys and girls 12 and under will be admitted free of charge.
