Communities Organize to Provide Free Training

The Winnisimmet Regional Opioid Collaborative (WROC), which was formed in early 2013, works to reduce fatal and non-fatal opioid overdoses as well as the misuse of prescription medication and over the counter drugs. As part of a pilot strategy, the group is organizing free opioid overdose prevention and reversal trainings within the four communities of the collaborative, Chelsea, Revere, Saugus and Winthrop.

This pilot strategy will provide education for friends and family members of those actively using opioids, who wish to be trained on how to reverse a potentially deadly overdose. In addition to heroin and other drugs, opioids also include prescription pain medications such as OxyContin®, Vicodin®, Percocet®. The trainings will also be useful to active users who wish to learn the risk factors that increase their chances of overdosing. At the free training participants will learn how to use and get access to Narcan, an opioid reversal drug. The trainings are opened to the public and insurance and appointments are not needed.
