WHS Hoop Star Dino Mallios to Play in Televised Game

Former Winthrop High basketball star Dino Mallios is coming to a television screen near you.

Mallios and his Saint Anselm College men’s basketball teammates will be playing Southern New Hampshire University in a game that will be televised nationally on the CBS Sports Network this Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

The game is being billed as cross-town rivalry as the two schools are less than seven miles apart in Manchester, New Hampshire. Mallios, who is leading the nation in assists at 8.3 per game, is featured on a poster promoting the game on the Saint Anselm Web site.

Following a Jan. 25 game at Bentley University in which he scored 13 points and dished out seven assists in Saint Anselm’s 88-79 victory, Mallios said he was excited about his team’s appearance on national television but he was focusing on the Hawks’ next game (which became a 98-47 rout of AIC on Feb. 1).

A capacity crowd, including Dino’s parents, Stephen and Elaine Mallios, is expected to be on hand at Saint Anselm’s Stoutenburgh Gymnasium for the game matching two of the top teams in the Northeast-10 conference. Saint Anselm (13-6) won last year’s NE-10 regular season title while Southern New Hampshire captured the conference championship.

After the two schools partnered to host the NCAA Men’s Basketball East Regional in Manchester last season, but never had the chance to meet on the court, excitement is running high in the Queen City for this match-up before a sellout crowd and national television audience.

“I am delighted by the opportunity for Saint Anselm to showcase its magnificent campus,” Saint Anselm President Dr. Steven DiSalvo said. “The student atmosphere promises to be highly charged as we welcome CBS Sports Network to Saint Anselm.”

“We are please, not only to be playing in a nationally televised game, but also to have the opportunity to showcase our wonderful campus,” said Saint Anselm head coach Keith Dickson. “Matching up against our crosstown rival is just an added bonus to what should be a special afternoon here on the Hilltop.”

Mallios was a two-time Boston Herald All-Scholastic for the Winthrop Vikings under former head coach David Brown. His brother, Vasili, played basketball at Winthrop High and Suffolk University and is a certified basketball referee officiating varsity high school games. His sister, Katerina Mallios, was a four-year player and a captain of the Babson College women’s basketball team before graduating in 2013.
