Vitale Predicts 75% Voter Turnout on Tuesday: Gill -Turco Contest and New School Vote Highlight Exciting Election

Town Clerk Carla Vitale is predicting a 75 percent turnout of the town’s 11,710 registered voters for the election on Tuesday, Nov. 5.

Vitale said several new voters have registered for the election.

“There was a 72 per cent turnout in the 2011 election and that was without a debt exclusion referendum,” said Vitale. “I would say that we’re going to beat 72 percent this time. We’re expecting a big turnout and we’re doing the work for it.”

This Tuesday voters will decide whether to approve funding for a new middle/high school project.

Town Council President Peter Gill and former Council President Jeffrey Turco are facing off in a rematch of their 2011 contest in which Gill defeated Turco in a close election. The two candidates have conducted highly visible and well-organized campaigns and the excitement is growing as Election Day approaches.

There are also contested races for Councilor-at-Large, School Committee, and Housing Authority.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Winthrop Middle School (Precincts 1, 2, and 5), the Robert A. DeLeo Senior Center (Precincts 3 and 6), and Golden Drive (Precinct 4).

Winthrop residents and officials will also be closely watching the results of casino referendums in East Boston and Revere.
