Winthrop Police Officer

Winthrop Police Officer Stephen Renzo “Punky” Acone of Winthrop passed away after a long illness with his loving family at his bedside on August 14.

Steve was a former Auxiliary Police Sergeant Winthrop P.D., former Sergeant with Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department for nine years and a Police Officer with the Winthrop Police Department for 22 years with 27 years in law enforcement. The owner of the Hot Diggitty Store in Winthrop for nine years and Joe & Steve’s Christmas trees, Steve was a graduate of Winthrop High School, Class of 1985.

He was the beloved son of the late Renzo and Judith (Hewitt) Acone, the husband of Bridget A. (Mulkerrin) Acone, loving brother of Donna L. Acone of Winthrop, cherished uncle of Paul, Cameron and Stephen, loving nephew of Donald and Brenda Acone of Winthrop, best friend of Joseph and Constance Mara of Winthrop,   John Twomey, former Superintendent of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department and Police Chief Terence Delehanty, Winthrop P.D and by many other family members.

Ida Poto

Retired Seamstress

Ida F. ( Scannapieco ) Poto of Winthrop, formerly of East Boston, died on August 12 at the Mass General Hospital  surrounded by her family. She was in her 98th year.

Ida, who was employed as a seamstress for Picariello and Singer and the Lanza Mills, was born in East Boston on November 14, 1915, the daughter of the late Giovanni and Emilia ( Taiani ) Scannapieco . She was the beloved wife of the late Edward N. Poto with whom she shared 62 years of marriage; loving mother of Anthony Poto, Master Teacher at Saugus High School and his wife, Marie of Salem and John Poto, former Head Master of East Boston High School and his wife, Lorraine of Winthrop; dear sister of the late Antoinetta Tescione and John Scannapieco, killed in the Battle of the Bulge in World War II and cherished grandmother of Rita Durgin, Marisa Indrisano, Michael, David, John, Eric and Anthony Poto. She also leaves 11 great grandchildren.
