Race for Congress Begins: Candidates Will Be Seeking Winthrop Votes

We know Winthrop voters may be “electioned out” at this point, but our democratic process is moving forward with a special election for the congressional seat previously held by Edward J. Markey, who was inaugurated last week as United States Senator, joining Sen. Elizabeth Warren in the U.S. Senate.

We had the opportunity to attend the kickoff campaign announcement by State. Sen. Katherine Clark on Saturday and there was a large crowd on hand at Memorial Hall in Melrose for the event. State Attorney General Martha Coakley introduced Clark and offered her support to Clark’s candidacy.

Locally, Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian, also a candidate for the Democratic nomination, attended the Winthrop Chamber of Commerce/Winthrop Rotary Legislative Luncheon Monday at the Amvets Club. Speaker Robert DeLeo gave Koutoujian a warm introduction at the luncheon and the Speaker’s support would certainly give the Sheriff a huge boost in what looks likely to be a hotly-contested race for the position. Speaker DeLeo was one of the first officials to endorse Markey in the Senate election.

And by the way, we should note what a great reception there was for our Speaker at the luncheon, sharing the dais with our outstanding state senator, Anthony Petruccelli.
