Winthrop Goes for Markey in Senate Special Election

Winthrop voters matched the state electorate by giving Congressman Edward J. Markey a decisive victory in Tuesday’s U.S. Senate special election.

Markey received 1,868 votes for 56 percent of all balloting in the town. Gabriel Gomez received 1,459 votes for 44 percent.

Markey received 642,988 votes statewide for 55 percent. Gomez received 525,080 votes for 45 percent. In Revere, Markey outpointed Gomez by a 60-39 margin.

Markey has served as a congressman for 37 years, having first been elected in 1976 in a district that includes Winthrop.

Markey will soon be inaugurated as the new U.S. Senator, resulting in a special election that will be called to fill the Congressional seat.
