Congressman Edward J. Markey, who has represented Winthrop for 37 years, won the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate seat in Tuesday’s special election. Markey received 57 percent of the vote statewide to defeat Congressman Stephen Lynch.
A small turnout in Winthrop gave Markey a 1,027-825 victory over Lynch. Markey carried all six precincts in the town, with the closest margin being one vote (139-138) in Precinct 2. He recorded his highest vote total (211) in Precinct 4.
Markey will face Republican nominee Gabriel E. Gomez in the final election on June 25. Gomez received 51 percent of the vote to defeat Michael J. Sullivan and Daniel Winslow.
The candidates are vying for the Senate seat that was held by John Kerry, who was appointed Secretary of State. U.S. Senator Liz Warren defeated incumbent Scott Brown last November.
