We applaud the efforts of School Committee Chairman Gary Skomro, who is leading the public evaluation of the job performance of Superintendent of Schools John Macero, to seek input from the community in this important process. Gary believes that this is the first time in the town’s history that the public has been invited to be fully engaged in the evaluation process and we believe the chairman deserves credit for wanting parents of schoolchildren, residents of the town, and town employees to have a say in the process.
Skomro has stated that Supt. Macero has done a very good job as superintendent, is visible in his important position as the leader of our schools, and is putting his imprint on our school system.
We agree that Supt. Macero has been an excellent leader of our schools, but we’ve known about his talents as an administrator from his previous work in Saugus and more recently as the principal of Whelan Elementary School in Revere. As a resident of Winthrop, Supt. Macero understands the makeup and dynamics of the school system and what it’s going to take to make it one of the best in the state.
As Chairman Skomro has indicated, Macero has worked very well with the principals and staff of our schools and been supportive of their leadership and approach to maximizing each student’s academic experience.
In short, we like the job that Supt. Macero has done since becoming our superintendent in July, 2011, but we look forward to seeing the evaluation from the public and we’re sure John himself will welcome the comments from parents and others.
