WHS Girls hoop team rolls past Marblehead

The Winthrop High girls basketball team rolled to its third victory of the young season with a runaway 58-33 triumph at Marblehead Friday night. The Lady Vikings, who now stand at 3-0, led at all of the junctures, starting with a 13-10 edge at the end of the first quarter.

However, the Winthrop girls soon took command of the encounter in the second period, building a 32-21 advantage at the half. The Lady Vikings’ full court defense began to pay dividends, creating turnovers that led to scoring opportunities.

“We pressed the whole game and I think that eventually began to wear Marblehead down,” said WHS head coach Ignacio Oyola.

Another spark for Winthrop was provided by freshman Nina Bartlett, who came off the bench and immediately made an impact, both with her rebounding and offense. Bartlett went to the line almost as soon as she hit the floor, and it was clear that Marblehead had no answer for the Winthrop lineup with the tall and talented Bartlett on the court. “This was Nina’s best game,” noted Oyola.

Winthrop continued to add to its lead after the intermission, enlarging it to 43-29 at the third buzzer. “We did a good job protecting the ball,” said Oyola. “We only committed 10 turnovers for the entire game (compared to 30 in the Lady Vikings’ season opener)  and we ran our set plays very well. The girls are really coming together nicely.”

Ashelyne Babb led the Winthrop offensive attack with 14 points. Nikki Tsiotis also reached double figures with a 10 point effort. Bartlett was next on the point parade with seven points, followed by Kristen Siscamanis with six; Jen Adamson and Liana Ferullo with five each; Theresa Jones with four; Polli Tsiotis, Maura Lanza, and Alyssa Mackey with two apiece; and Temison Meggison with a free throw. Oyola and his crew will travel to non-league rival Georgetown Friday evening and then will host the rematch Monday afternoon with a 3:00 tip-off. The two schools have engaged in a nice rivalry in the past two seasons, with both winning on the other’s home court each year.

Lady Vikings run past Saugus, 55-31

The Winthrop High girls indoor track team captured its second win of the young season with 55-31 romp over Saugus last Thursday.

The Lady Vikings captured first place in seven of the nine individual events. First place finishers for Winthrop were: Amy Sena with a leap of 4-10 in the high jump and a run of 3:31 in the 1000; Ashley Jurovich with a toss of 31-0 in the shotput; Carly O’Keefe in the 55 meter hurdles in 9.6; Holly Benson in the 600 with a clocking of 1:59; Michaela McCarthy in the mile in 6:46.7; and Abigail Love with a two mile run of 13:50.

Second place efforts for Winthrop, which earned three points for the Lady Viking side of the scoresheet, came from: McCarthy with a high jump of 4-10; Jurovich in the hurdles in 11.1; Jordan Griffiths in the 300 in 49.8; and Heidy Benson in the mile in 6:50.2 in which she edged out the Saugus girl for that spot by just 0.2 of a second.

Third place points for Winthrop were forwarded by Julia Wallace with her leap in the high jump of 4-8; Olivia Rago in the 600 in 2:08.9; and Maria Rago in the 1000 in 3:50.9.

The Winthrop girls also were credited with a win on the 4 x 400 relay.

The Lady Vikings’ next meet is Monday against Gloucester.

Corbett-Frank wins for boys track team

Jordan Corbett-Frank provided the main highlight for the Winthrop High boys indoor track team with a victory in the 50 yard dash last Thursday against Saugus. Jordan sprinted to victory in 7.0 seconds.

Also netting points for the Vikings were Trevor Hetheron with a third place finish in the 55 meter hurdles in 10.3; Russell Trainor with a second place finish in the 300 in 45.4; Marc Bouche with a third in the 300 in 46.3; Shawn Preble with a second in the mile in 6:04.7; and Zack Bonilla with a third in the two mile in 13:22.

Also competing for the Vikings were David Ventura with a fourth in the shotput with a toss of 32-2 and a clocking of 7.7 in the 55 dash; Alex Kelly with a shotput heave of 26-1; Tony Almonte with a shotput throw of 26-4; Amin Louali with a fourth in the 55 hurdles in 10.4; Devin Racow with a fourth in the 600 in 2:02.7; Joey Bosco with a fourth in the 1000 in 3:34; and Dan Sennott with a fifth in the 1000 in 3:35.

The boys will meet Gloucester Monday.
