Welcome to Our New CFO: Timothy Gordon Steps into Key Position

We knew that Town Manager James McKenna had a very important announcement to make at Tuesday’s Town Council meeting because it was moved to the very top of the agenda just moments after the Pledge of Allegiance. McKenna announced to the Council, the assembled crowd, and the residents watching the meeting that Timothy J. Gordon had been named the new chief financial officer (CFO) for the Town of Winthrop.

Gordon was selected from a number of outstanding candidates who applied for one of the most important positions in our town government. Gordon has an extensive background in the financial services industry, having worked as an auditing director in the financial department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and as a manager at Price Waterhouse, one of the largest accounting firms in the world. We’re also pleased to report that Mr. Gordon has also served in the Air National Guard and is a lieutenant colonel.

Gordon will also bring the valuable experience of municipal service as the chairman of the Holbrook Board of Selectmen. Holbrook is a town on the South Shore with similar issues to Winthrop such as the proposed construction of a new school.

Gordon’s firsthand knowledge of that subject and his understanding of the financial aspects of school construction projects will be a huge asset as our town moves forward in coordination with the Massachusetts School Building Authority.

Gordon takes office as the town, like communities statewide, face some uncertainties about state aid and other projected revenues. It’s another key juncture in our town’s history and we welcoem the arrival of Mr. Gordon and wish him well in his new position.
