Thank You, Pat Mcgee

We want to take this opportunity to thank Pat McGee for her 33 years of outstanding service as the boys track coach at Winthrop High School. Pat McGee is an inductee in the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Hall of Fame, a major honor that bespeaks of her status as one of the all-time greats in the coaching profession.

Pat always has loved the sport of track and field. A superb competitor herself, Pat has won  several medals at the Senior Games. Her son, Kevin, set the WHS high jump record (and also played on the Vikings’ undefeated state championship hockey team in 1976).

She remains a strong supporter of all WHS sports and attended each football game where she watched proudly as her grandson, Bo Diaz, was a star player for this year’s Viking team.

But Pat’s true legacy always will be the countless Winthrop High athletes whom she helped develop their skills and go on to compete at the collegiate level. In our experience, and we don’t mind saying that it goes a long way  back, we never have encountered anyone with as much dedication and passion for her program and her athletes as Pat McGee.

Pat told us that she is “extremely disappointed” that she won’t be returning to lead the track program this winter. We have no doubt that the literally hundreds of WHS track and field athletes who brought numerous league and individual titles to Winthrop High under her tutelage also will be both saddened and shocked by the news. A four member committee made the decision to select a new leader for the track program for which practice for the new season began Monday.

Pat McGee is a true legend on the WHS sports scene who left a tremendous imprint on the athletic program. We know we join with every Winthrop resident (and they number in the thousands) who has come to know this energetic and vivacious woman over the decades in wishing Pat the best and thanking her for a job well done.
