Texting While Driving : Students Learn First Hand About Its Dangers

WHS Principal Gail Conlon called it “tremendously moving” and Council President Peter Gill said it  was “impactful.” Those are descriptions of a video that was shown last Friday at the high school for WHS students. It was a video that dramatically illustrated the dangers of texting while driving: Statistics show that a person is 23 times more likely to be in an accident if he/she is texting while driving.

Another key point is that it only takes mere seconds of looking away from the road and looking down at the phone at a text message to present a potentially tragic situation for drivers and passengers.

The video was part of AT&T’s “It Can Wait” Educational Outreach Program and the message “don’t text while driving” was certainly instilled in the minds of the students who attended this important assembly.

Speaker of the House Robert A. DeLeo was very instrumental in bringing this important and thought-provoking program to Winthrop. The Speaker wanted Winthrop students to be a part of the program (students could sign a “No texting while driving” pledge afterwards) and he understands the importance of this issue, especially for new drivers such as high school juniors and seniors.

The Speaker once again came through for the town in a big way and we’re grateful to him for looking out for our students’ safety and decision making.
