Fall Sports Registration Set for July 23 and 31; Hoop Coach Selection Looming

Athletic Director Peter Gobiel said this week that the department will host to registration nights for 2013 fall sports on Monday, July 23 and Tuesday, July 31. Registration times will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on each night at the Winthrop High School gymnasium.

“This is just like what we’ve done in the past year with other sports, as a way of determining the level of interest and helping us to determine how much participation we are going to have so we can develop the fall athletics budget and head into the school year with some idea of how many student we’re going to be serving.”

Student athletes signing up for the fall season sports are asked to bring an updated physical form, a completed concussion certificate and the user fee of $225 per sport, per athlete. The school accepts cash, check or money order payable to Town of Winthrop and credit card as acceptable forms of payment for fees.

The concussion certificate is available by logging on to http://whs.winthrop.k12.ma.us and searching under athletics.

Varsity basketball coach search nearing end

Gobiel also reported that the search committee to identify the next varsity basketball coach at Winthrop High School has identified their preferred candidate, but that the final decision will rest with WHS Principal Gail Conlon.

“To be fair, all hires in the school have to be approved by the principal and we have not had a chance to sit down and discuss the choice of the committee at this time,” said Gobiel. “I am hoping that we’ll be able to have that discussion this week and announce the new coach at the School Committee meeting, but it really depends on our schedules.”

According to Gobiel a five member search committee including Christopher Tsiotis (a former standout basketball players at WHS), parent Quinton Dale, Phil Lundberg, School Committee member Melissa Polino and Gobiel himself interviewed five oif the 11 applicants for the job and came to agreement on the candidate they have put forward for Conlon’s consideration.

Gobiel did add that Conlon may want to meet the candidate before making a decision.
