With the Fourth of July vacation week here, the summer season is in full swing. For those of us who have lived in Winthrop for all of our lives, the short window of opportunity Mother Nature provides us for beaching and boating with our friends and family finally has arrived, fulfilling the dreams which have kept us going through the dreary winter months.
Although we used George Gershwin’s lyrics for the headline of this editorial, our favorite summertime song remains Nat King Cole’s Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days of Summer (words by Charles Tobias and music by Hans Karste), which never fails to bring a smile to our face when we hear it and which we all sing along to when it plays on the radio.
(And, given that it was a top 10 hit in 1963, it brings back a lot of memories of our summers as children on Pt. Shirley when the Point still had a sizeable summer community.)
So in the spirit of the summer season, we have reprinted some of those lyrics below. We hope all of our readers are able to enjoy these all-too-short summer months that lie ahead.
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Those days of soda and pretzels and beer
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Dust off the sun and moon and sing a song of cheer
Just fill your basket full of sandwiches and weenies
Then lock the house up, now you’re set
And on the beach you’ll see the girls in their bikinis
As cute as ever but they never get em wet
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Those days of soda and pretzels and beer
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
You’ll wish that summer could always be here
