Town Manager James McKenna rolled out his proposal for the vacant director’s position at the Winthrop Public Library, saying that he hopes to regionalize the position and have one person serve as the director of the Revere and Winthrop libraries.
It’s certainly an idea that deserves to be considered. There would be a significant savings for the town, though the right choice must be made so that patrons of the Winthrop Library can see this treasured institution continue to operate in the professional manner it has in the past.
It’s a first-in-the-state proposal, according to McKenna, who deserves much credit for his innovative way of thinking. Of course, McKenna will get a feel from Winthrop residents about his idea before he begins advertising for the regional director’s position.
But this creativeness is exactly what we need from our town manager in an era when all the rules are changing.
