Veterans Day is Friday and we hope that all residents will take the time in some way to remember and thank the veterans of the United States Armed Forces in our town for their service to our country.
We urge all residents to join with the American Legion Post 146 and attend the formal Veteran’s Day ceremonies on Friday at 11 a.m. on the lawn in front of Winthrop Town Hall. Captain Lisa Larity of the United States Air Force will be the principal speaker. Capt. Larity, a Winthrop resident, has been deployed the past few years as a Flight Nurse accompanying wounded American military personnel out of Iraq, Afghanistan and other hot spots in the Middle East.
Following the services, there will be a rededication of the Crest Avenue Park honoring Edmund “Duke” McNeil. The name of Edmund “Duke” McNeil will be added to the memorial sign honoring Duke’s son, Edmund McNeil III, who was died as a result of injuries suffered in the Vietnam War. Duke is being remembered for his years of service in the US Army along with the US Coast Guard.
