John Koumanelis 

Jeweler

John W. Koumanelis of Nashville, Tennessee, formerly of Winthrop, died in Nashville on October 8. He was 58 years old.

Born in Winthrop and currently employed as a jeweler, he was the son of the late William Z. and Freda A. (Novosel) Koumanelis; dear brother of Paul S. Koumanelis and his wife, Gladys of Nashville, TN, and the late Alan A. Koumanelis; cherished partner of Gerry Co of Jacksonville, Florida; adored uncle of Alexandra, Athena, and Adrian Koumanelis.

Visiting hours will be held at the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home, 210 Winthrop St., Winthrop on Friday, October 21 from 4 to 8 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited. Ellen Kiernan 

Retired Winthrop physical education teacher

Ellen E. Kiernan, formerly of Winthrop, died Sunday in a local nursing home after a long illness.  She was 93 years old.

Born in Chelsea, she was the daughter of the late Atty. Louis R. Kiernan, Sr. and the late Helen E. (Supple) Kiernan.  She was raised in Chelsea and was a graduate of Chelsea High School, Class of 1936.  She received her degree in Health and Physical Education from Boston University Sargent College.  She lived in Winthrop from 1940 until moving to Brooksby Village in Peabody nearly 10 years ago.

Ms. Kiernan worked as a Physical Education teacher in the Winthrop school system for more than 30 years until her retirement in 1977.  She was a communicant of Holy Rosary Church in Winthrop, a member of the Winthrop Historical Association and the Sargent College Alumnae.

She is survived by several close cousins and many close friends.  She was the sister of the late Louis R. “Sonny” Kiernan, Jr.

Her funeral will be held today, Thursday, at 10 a.m. from the Solimine, Landergan and Richardson Funeral Home, 67 Ocean St. (Rt 1A) Lynn, followed by a Funeral Mass in Holy Rosary Church, Winthrop at 12 Noon.  Burial will be in Winthrop Cemetery.  Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.  Visitation will be today from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the funeral.  Those who prefer may make donations to Grosvenor Park Activity Fund, c/o Barbara Lasovick, 7 Loring Hills Ave., Salem, MA 01970.  Directions and guestbook at www.solimine.com.

Theodore Craft 

American Airlines Retiree

Theodore J. Craft of Winthrop died at the Cambridge Hospital on October 14. He was 86 years old.

A U. S. Navy veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Northeast Vanguards. Prior to his retirement, he worked as a Quality Control Manager for American Airlines.

He was the beloved husband of Eileen M. (Phelan) Craft; born in Boston, he was the son of the late Ralph N and Helen (Malinowski) Craft; devoted father of Francis J. Craft and his wife, Charlotte of West Sayville, L.I. NY, Carol A. Craft of Raleigh, NC, and Richard A. Craft of Winthrop; dear brother of Dr. Ralph N. Craft of Fernandina Beach, FL, and the late Francis Craft of Nahant; loving grandpa of Catherine Eileen and Thomas Joseph Craft of New York and is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

George Kalish 

Of Florida, formerly of Winthrop

George N. Kalish of Tamarac, Florida, formerly of Newton and Winthrop, died on October 14. He was 89 year old,

He was the beloved husband of Bea (Alter), and the late Sylvia Kalish; loving father of Robert Kalish and his wife, Susan, Richard Kalish and his wife, Elisabeth Keller and Judith Barredo; adored grandfather of Joshua, Zachary, Sarah, Samantha, and Harrison; devoted brother of Beverly Hammer and her husband, Jack, and the late Sylvia Press; dear brother-in-law of William Aronson and his wife, Gisele.

Services will be held in Florida. A local memorial observance will be announced.

John Ward Jr. 

Maryland resident

John J. Ward, Jr. of Annapolis, MD died on October 10.

He is survived by his wife, Donna Ward of Annapolis, MD; daughter Karen Kincer and her husband, Blair Kincer of Rockville, MD; four grandchildren, Mary, Suzette, Maggie and Jake Kincer of Rockville, MD; two sisters, Joan E. Hurley of Maynard, MA and Sister Judith T. Ward of Brighton, MA; and many nieces and nephews.

Theodore Richardson 

Of Boston, formerly of Winthrop

Theodore “Teddy” Richardson of Boston, formerly of Winthrop, died on August 30. He was 51 years old.

Born in Winthrop, he attended Winthrop High School and was the beloved son of the late Elaine Richardson. He is survived by his father, Theodore and his wife, Ginny, of Kittery, Maine; his brother, James of Winthrop, his sister, Rhonda Leyden and her husband, Bob, of Plymouth, and his sister, Cathy Smith and her husband, Steve, of Lakeville, MN. He is also survived by his nephews, Tom, Dan, Peter, Chris and Matt.
