Gill Officially Announces His Candidacy for President’s Post

Peter Gill has announced his candidacy for Winthrop Town Council President in the November election.  A life-long resident of Winthrop, Peter and his wife Maureen live on Plummer Avenue.

After graduating from Winthrop High School, Peter attended Fitchburg State College where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree.  He continued his studies at Salem State where he received a graduate degree in Educational Administration.  After a long and distinguished career as a teacher and administrator in the Swampscott Public Schools, Peter embarked on a career as a local business owner and real estate broker.

Long active in local affairs, Peter is currently a member of the Town’s Board of Assessors.  He also served, for some 40 years as a Town Meeting member.  Other community involvement includes serving as a volunteer at the Winthrop Food Panty for three years, Past President of the Winthrop Chamber of Commerce, and membership in the local Elks lodge. Peter is an active communicant at St. John the Evangelist Parish.

Peter will bring to the office of Council President a passion for the Town of Winthrop and a desire to give back to the community that has given so much to him and his family.  His professional experience and the talents with which he has been blessed – including strong organizational, interpersonal, and collaborative and communication skills – will serve him, and Winthrop, well.

Peter firmly believes that democracy is not a spectator sport. He will provide opportunities for each person to participate as a citizen, not merely a resident by welcoming and encouraging citizen input and participation in the workings of Winthrop Town government. He will ask his fellow citizens to share their unique talents through service on Town committees, hearing and respecting their opinions.

In announcing his candidacy, Peter remarked, “I have great love for and pride in Winthrop. My wife Maureen, I along with our four children were born and brought up in Winthrop.  We all attended the Winthrop’s public schools and appreciate the educational opportunities provided to us. I now have the desire and the time to ‘give back’ to our hometown. ‘Winthrop Pride’ is something that all Winthrop citizens should share.  Everyone has a hometown, but not one as unique as Winthrop.  Let’s treasure our common heritage.  Winthrop is a nice place to live.  Fellow citizens, please join me in helping to keep it that way.
