The friendly church at the beach has been sold and will most likely be developed into apartments.Â
Union Congregational Church on Tewksbury Street – just a stone’s throw from Winthrop Beach – recently sold its church building and its large parking lot to Paul J. Ferrara Sr. – a developer based on Revere Street.
The church property went for $200,000 and the parking lot for $100,000 in a recent sale, according to filed property records.
The church address is 22 Tewksbury St. and the lot is at 15 Perkins St.
Contacted by phone recently, Ferrara said that they are still in the beginning stages of deciding exactly what to do with the property, but he said it would be a new residential development.
There are no official filings or building permits with the Town just yet, but he did mention that he could be seeking around nine units for the expansive property – which is already in a residential neighborhood.
The church building has been in existence for many decades in the Crystal Cove neighborhood.

It is sad to see this wonderful church go. I have many fond memories of attending school there. My father Ralph L Keller of Winthrop taught Sunday school there starting at the age of 13 ! He taught until he was in his fourties and we moved to Marblehead. My first Sunday school teacher was Mrs. Alice Rowe Snow. She was the mother of Edward Rowe Snow the author. I'm really sad but comforted by the fact this" Friendly Church By The Beach" played such a pivotal role in shaping me as a man.

So sad to read about this closing... many fond memories of my childhood are tied to UCC! Singing in the junior choir (though I couldn't carry a tune), Â baked bean suppers... Names and faces of long forgotten childhood friends are rushing back.Â
$300k seems awfully low. I can't believe that property isn't worth more than that! And apartments won't be good news for that area. Hopefully they'll be condos instead.
