Lefty DeFelice

His presence will be missed, but always felt

That was a beautiful eulogy delivered by Susan DeFelice, speaking on behalf of her family, at the funeral Mass for her father, Anthony “Lefty” DeFelice, Monday morning at St. John’s the Evangelist Church.

Susan elegantly articulated the full and rewarding life that Mr. DeFelice led, from his early years in which we learned he received two double promotions and launched his love of sports, through his later years when he became the patriarch of a wonderful family that consisted of three children, seven grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.

The sports community in Winthrop has been personally touched by Mr. DeFelice’s sons, Frank and Robert, whose exploits on the field earned them election to the Winthrop High Hall of Fame. Frank went on to become a successful baseball and football coach while Robert has built an outstanding athletic program at Bentley University as its director of athletics following his incredible run as the Winthrop High football coach that included three consecutive undefeated seasons and two Super Bowl championships.

Mr. DeFelice was loved and admired by all who knew him and we recall fondly his presence at Winthrop High athletic events. It brought Mr. DeFelice great joy to be at these events and he always greeted people with a warm smile and heartfelt greeting.

“Lefty” was a wonderful person, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. May he rest in peace.
