DOR removes Winthrop from ‘watch list’
Town Manager James McKenna had some good news for Winthrop residents when he announced that the Massachusetts Department of Revenue has removed the town from the “watch list†and that Winthrop is on sound, financial footing. It was not too long ago that the threats of closing our public library and our senior center were being discussed as possible options to solve the town’s precarious financial situation. The passage by residents of the Proposition 2 1/2 overrides and the excellent leadership of Mr. McKenna, Finance Director Michael Bertino, Assistant Finance Director Michelle Karas, the Town Council, and the department heads, all of whom worked together, helped Winthrop emerge from the financial depths to the point where the DOR officially has stated that the town is in good shape.
But no one is resting on the laurels of the good news. There are tough times ahead. But every resident should have confidence that our town leaders will make the right decisions, just as they have done in the past.

Town has at least 2 unrealized revenue streams.
1. The ice rink should be in use at least 14 hours a day.
2. Ticketing hmes who do not shovel.
3. Ticketing people blowing through the 4 way stop at the police station
