DET. MacFARLAND

A true professional

The retirement of long time Winthrop Police Detective Robert McFarland brings to an end an era in the Winthrop Police Department. Bobby McFarland was with the Winthrop P.D. for an amazing 36 years (34 of which were as a detective). He was the last of his generation of local police officers, having started out just a few years after officers such as Mike McManus and Pat Staff, and was around long enough to have served with former Chief David Rice and the legendary Bobby Crawford.

Last Thursday’s retirement party for Det. McFarland was a fitting tribute to a consummate professional, with tributes flowing from colleagues such as Chief Terence Delehanty and Lieut. Frank Scarpa, who noted how McFarland had taken him under his wing when he first joined the force.

Bob McFarland was a true “cop’s cop” who was well liked and respected by all who knew him and worked with him. We know we join with the thousands of Winthrop residents who have benefitted from his service in wishing him the best in his retirement years, as he now will have the opportunity to spend time with his family and granddaughter Kylie in particular
