Girls soccer team one-ups Shawsheen

Senior Haley Benson scored two first half goals and junior Nicole Black scored what would prove to be the eventual game winner to power the Winthrop High girls soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Shawsheen Tech last week.

Alyssa Moore and Black were credited with assists on the goals by Benson, while Black reached the back of the Shawsheen net unassisted.

The triumph was sandwiched between two tough losses of 2-1 to Lynn English last Wednesday and 1-0 to Revere this past Tuesday.

“We played well in both of those games,” said WHS head coach Tracy Martucci. “In the Revere game we controlled the play and had 27 shots on goal, which shows that we had plenty of offense. We just couldn’t put the ball in the net.”

Black notched the goal against English, assisted by Benson.

The Lady Vikings held Senior Night festivities with a game against Medford last night (Wednesday) and will wrap up their 2010 campaign Monday hosting Gloucester.
