The Winthrop Parks and Recreation Department has a new home.
Sean Driscoll, director, said the department began its move to the new location inside the Winthrop Middle School Tuesday. The site is the former technology and shop area inside the middle school, situated on the same floor as the school cafeteria.
“Our entrance will be from the back side of Brookfield Road and Ingleside Park,†said Driscoll. “We have a sign on the door where our offices are.â€
There will be no interruption in the after-school programs. “We’re working on the space and it will be up and running next week,†said Driscoll.
The Parks and Recreation Department is coming off a highly successful summer program that had a record turnout of 207 boys and girls taking part in various activities daily at Ingleside Park.
Driscoll feels the move to the middle school will continue the program’s momentum and be a positive one for the department.
“I know this is going to be a positive situation for us overlooking the park and being right next to Larsen Rink,†said Driscoll. “We have more space now. It’s going to be a better location for us.â€
Driscoll praised Middle School Principal Martha Kelleher and Assistant Principal James Burke for their support of the move.
“They’ve been tremendous in assisting our relocation effort,†said Driscoll. “They’re looking forward to having us inside their school building. This move is going to lead to our program having a bigger and better operation, especially targeting the middle school-age children.â€
Town Manager James McKenna, who was instrumental in the overall decision to move the department’s headquarters to the middle school, told the Town Council Tuesday night that he considers the new location an ideal one for the youth program.
