Jenny Fucillo and Jake Connors concluded their memorable track careers at Winthrop High with fine performances at Saturday’s State Track Meet held at Westfield State College. Both had qualified for the State Meet with second place finishes in the Division 4 meet the previous week.
Fucillo finished in seventh place in the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 1:06.07 to put two points for Winthrop on the scoresheet. The field was exceptionally strong, with three girls breaking the previous meet record of 1:02.82 in that event.
“Jenny saved her best performance for the biggest race,†said WHS girls coach Warren MacPhail, who noted that Fucillo’s clocking was a personal record (PR) for his senior star who was named the MVP of the Northeastern Conference this spring. “It was her cleanest race ever and a fine ending to a fantastic high school track career. But it’s sad knowing she’s moving on..She’ll be missed!!â€
As for Jake “Skywalker†Connors, his leap of 6-2 in the high jump gave him 10th spot . The winning jump of 6-6 was the height Jake achieved earlier in the season when he established a new WHS record, breaking the previous mark of 6-4 that had stood for 35 years.
“The amazing thing about Jake is that he has been competing in track for only two seasons and he’s achieved so much in such a short time frame,†said his coach, Pat McGee.
