WHS girls hockey team overwhelms Peabody

The Winthrop high girls hockey team moved two points closer to securing a berth in the post season state tournament with an overwhelming 11-1 victory over Peabody Saturday at Larsen Rink.

The triumph truly was a total team victory for coach Anthony Martucci’s Lady Bulldogs, who spread the goal scoring around as no less than 10 Winthrop girls took turns lighting the red lamp.

The scoring breakdown in the dominating win was as follows: Taylor Brown with two goals; McKenzie Clark, a goal and two assists; Anna Fucillo, Chelsey Bartlett, Lindsay Barker, Taylor Papsadaro, and Amanda Cordes, all with a goal and an assist; Caroline McKinnon, Rachel Mailhiot, and Flora English with a goal each; and Emma Rudser with an assist.

For English, a sixth grader, one of three sixth graders on the team, the goal marked her first career lamplighter, which was a cause for celebration among her teammates.

The Blue Line foursome of senior Kelly Devenney, junior Brown, sixth grader Juliana Kennedy, and sixth grader Rudser proved formidable throughout the contest defending the Winthrop goal in support of Lady Bulldog netminder Katie Burt. Peabody was limited to just 15 shots on goal and beat Burt just once, on a power play.

“We played well and everybody contributed,” said Martucci, whose squad now stands at 5-2-5 on the season and needs five points out of a possible 16 in the their remaining eight games in order to punch their ticket for a Journey to the Tourney.

The Lady Bulldogs were set to travel to Wilmington Wednesday and will host Cambridge Saturday at Larsen. Face off time for the latter contest is 4:30.
