An Impressive Ceremony – A fitting tribute to our veterans

That was an impressive ceremony led by Winthrop American Legion Post 146 on the Town Hall lawn Wednesday marking the annual observance of Veterans Day.

Veterans Day initially was observed as Armistice Day in the aftermath of World War I to mark the end of that terrible conflict, with the truce taking place on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Many decades later, Veterans Day was proclaimed as a day to honor military veterans of all of our wars who performed service to protect our nation and preserve the freedoms that we take for granted.

With our nation’s military forces engaged in conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, Veterans Day is a time to recognize the men and women presently serving our country with distinction and bravery. Hopefully, all of our armed forces will be back with their families sooner rather than later. But until that time comes, we know that America’s finest will do their duty, even if it means placing themselves in danger where they may be called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice.
