Town Council President Thomas Reilly announced the three finalists for town manager at the council meeting Tuesday night at the Winthrop Senior Center.

The finalists are James McKenna, a private attorney who has previously been the chief administrative officer for the City of Gloucester and administrator for the Town of Dover; Andrew Maylor, town administrator of Swampscott and former deputy city manager of Chelsea, and former town accountant and town treasurer of Winthrop; and John Moak, mayor of Newburyport.

More than 40 candidates applied for the position. The Town Manager Selection Committee interviewed several candidates and submitted a list of three finalists to Reilly, who will make the final decision as outlined in the town charter.

Reilly scheduled a public interview for the three candidates with the Town Council on Monday, May 11. The individual interviews will begin at approximately 5 p.m. at Town Hall.

Reilly praised the five-member selection committee composed of Peter Finn, Paul Leavy, Larry Powers, Carol Lederman and Marie Turner.

“I do want to thank the search committee,” said Reilly. “They did an outstanding job. They were very serious about it. They very thoroughly and carefully evaluated all the resumes. They put in long hours, and they were a tremendous asset to me in trying to move toward a decision.”

Reilly said one of the candidates sent him an e-mail praising the professionalism of the search committee.

The new town manager will succeed Larry Holmes, who has been serving as interim town manager, replacing former Town Manager Rick White, who resigned to take a position with the Town of Dennis.

Town Council office hours start Monday

The members of the Winthrop Town Council will hold office hours at Town Hall on Monday May 11 to Thursday, May 14, from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

The idea for office hours was initiated by Councillor James Letterie.

“I encourage residents to come down and get answers to any questions they may have about town issues,” said Letterie.
