The heartbreaking loss to North Cambridge Catholic in overtime for the Winthrop High boys basketball team in Sunday’s final of the Division 4 North Sectional was a tough one, but it in no way diminishes the outstanding season enjoyed by coach Dave Brown and his Vikings. Winthrop truly showed it belongs among the elite programs in the state this season. One of Winthrop’s opponents in the Northeastern Conference, Lynn English, is playing for the Division 1 state championship. Winthrop gave English all it could handle in their regular season meeting.
The incredible 3-pointer by Gavin Mahoney at the buzzer to send Sunday’s game into overtime will stand as one of the most exciting moments in the glorious history of Winthrop High hoop annals.
We congratulate coach David Brown on an excellent season and junior Dino Mallios for scoring the 1,000th point of his career in Sunday’s unforgettable game, and we look forward to an even more exciting season next year.
